By providing more space for water around Dutch rivers, flood risks will be reduced. That’s what the program Room for the River is about. In Nijmegen there is the project ‘Room for the Waal’. The Dutch government has decided a dike replacement alongside river Waal in Nijmegen is the best solution to reduce the flood risk of the area around this river. It is a special Room for the River project, because it is the first time a new dike is created in an existing urban area in the Netherlands.

The aim of the project ‘Space for the Waal’ is twofold: The aim of the project ‘Room for the Waal’ is twofold:
1. To reduce the flood risk for the area around the river, in other words:
‘Nijmegen should become a FloodResilientCity’.
2. to contribute to strengthening the spatial quality of the area around the river.
On request of the national government, the municipality of Nijmegen is responsible for the project design. This plan will be finished at the end of 2010. Different variants of a spatial plan will be developed during this period. The completion of the entire project will be in 2015.
