The objective of work package ‘Strategy & Capacity’ is to develop capacity within the partner organisations to adapt to and manage flood risk by integrating activities under the four A’s (Awareness, Avoidance, Alleviation and Assistance).

Main actions
  • The development of sustainable Flood Risk Management communication systems
  • New city spatial plans including dike relocation and other avoidance and alleviation impacts on urban planning
  • Linking non-structural response options to awareness raising and engagement
  • Examples of new technologies in Flood Risk Management
  • Implementing new strategies based on review of current strategies

Expected impacts
The outputs of this WP shall ultimately lead to policy improvements in each city. The pioneer role of the participating cities will provide examples of the use of the FloodResilienCity strategy ideas and contribute to their acceptance nationally.

in the spotlight

In order to give more ‘room for the river’ and avoid future flooding, in the Dutch city of Nijmegen the dike at Lent along the river Waal will be replaced 350 meters land inwards, leaving an island in the middle of the river.

By providing more space for water around Dutch rivers, flood risks will be reduced. That’s what the program Room for the River is about.
