The objective of work package ‘Awareness’ is to enhance awareness and increase engagement of all stakeholders to be better prepared for floods. This will be at policy level (politicians), professional level (technical experts) and public level (people, companies, developers, insurance companies) in each partner city.

Main actions
  • Using flood models to identify where the flood damages will occur.
  • To make people aware by bringing back the relation of the city and the river.
  • Cost Benefit Analysis tool to provide information on potential flood damages and on the options to mitigate those damages.
  • Framework for promoting Awareness and capacity to respond to flood risks.

Expected impacts
Increased awareness and engagement will bring flood risk management higher on the political agenda in the partner cities. That opens the door to make flood risk management a more prominent item in urban development and spatial planning issues. The public (inhabitants and businesses) will take a more active role in flood risk management. Public stakeholders will notice that they can act themselves and that they are not fully depending on the authorities.

in the spotlight

In order to give more ‘room for the river’ and avoid future flooding, in the Dutch city of Nijmegen the dike at Lent along the river Waal will be replaced 350 meters land inwards, leaving an island in the middle of the river.

By providing more space for water around Dutch rivers, flood risks will be reduced. That’s what the program Room for the River is about.
