The objective of work package ‘Assistance’ is to provide support to recovery processes prior to, during and after flood events (calamity management).

Main actions
  • Design of the emergency routes to and from a newly created island
  • An online GIS tool improving urban areas reconstruction
  • Insurance + Finance services and their place in the FRC strategy in all 8 cities
  • Strengthening communities in their assistance before, during and after a flood

Expected impacts
This WP will exchange practices on flood assistance measures and will demonstrate to the policy makers (local, regional and national) that all the 8 cities are implementing a different set of flood assistance measures. The transnational cooperation will show the policy makers that they can choose for more different assistance measures.

in the spotlight

In order to give more ‘room for the river’ and avoid future flooding, in the Dutch city of Nijmegen the dike at Lent along the river Waal will be replaced 350 meters land inwards, leaving an island in the middle of the river.

By providing more space for water around Dutch rivers, flood risks will be reduced. That’s what the program Room for the River is about.
