The FloodResilienCity project runs from 1 Mai 2007 until 31 December 2013.

There are two types of activities in the FRC project:
  • Transnational work packages with meetings between the politicians and technical experts of the eight partner cities to benefit from each other’s knowledge and experiences.
  • Regional pilot projects with measures and investments to reduce flood risks in each partner city.
Transnational activities and meetings comprise international conferences, international theme sessions for detailed discussions between experts, ‘8-cities summits’ for informal discussions between politicians from the partner cities, field trips, partner staff exchanges, intervision and other project meetings.

In order to give more ‘room for the river’ and avoid future flooding, in the Dutch city of Nijmegen the dike at Lent along the river Waal will be replaced 350 meters land inwards, leaving an island in the middle of the river.

By providing more space for water around Dutch rivers, flood risks will be reduced. That’s what the program Room for the River is about.
